What behavioural detection is

Seeing intent before it becomes an incident

Every BPS BDO is Close Protection trained, so the officer who spots hostile intent can follow it through to the point of intervention, quietly and alongside your security team and control room. We created and deliver the original Highfield accredited Level 3 BDO course, including to departments of the Metropolitan Police.

What we provide

Why venues bring in BPS behavioural detection

  • Early warning

Our operatives look for the behaviour that comes before an incident, such as hostile reconnaissance, rehearsal and unusual interest in your security, so threats are dealt with before they develop.

  • A visible deterrent, or none at all

We favour covert deployment, blending into the crowd, and can deploy overtly where a visible presence helps.

  • Calm, professional intervention

Our BDOs are all Close Protection trained, so the same officer who identifies a concern can engage the person through conversation and open questions. Most concerns are resolved there and then.

  • Safeguarding

Increasingly, BDOs are deployed in safeguarding roles, spotting and intervening with predators before vulnerable people become victims. A significant number of our BDOs are also safeguarding trained, helping you deliver a safe event.

  • Information straight to your control room

Our teams work with your CCTV control room and venue security, so decisions are made early and in proportion.

  • Specialist capability without building it in-house

Bring in trained, vetted BDOs for the tasks you need, rather than recruiting and training your own. The majority of our BDOs have deployed in this capacity in both the public and private sectors, bringing a higher level of credibility and capability than any other supplier.

  • Supporting your Martyn's Law approach

BDOs are not required by the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act, but they can play a valuable part in a proactive approach to reducing risk.

How we can deploy

As part of a disruptive effects package. We deploy BDOs as part of a wider disruptive effects package, so suspicious behaviour is followed through to the point of intervention, with our response scaled to the threat and the intelligence picture.

Single events. Match days, concerts, conferences, AGMs, red carpets and premieres, planned from the venue assessment to the final egress.

Standing deployments and short notice. We provide full-time behavioural detection for prestigious clients, from parliamentarians to high profile venues, and can deploy at short notice when the threat changes.

Aztec teams for protection details. Our Aztec teams are behavioural detection teams deployed around government and royal principals as part of a wider protection package, usually alongside close protection teams. They read the ground ahead of and around the principal, including around Members of Parliament and at diplomatic events.

UK and worldwide.

From first call to debrief

How it works

  1. Talk to us

Call the 24 hour line or send a secure enquiry with the venue, the date, the expected attendance and what concerns you.

  2. Venue assessment

We assess footfall, entrances, exits, VIP areas and vulnerabilities, and agree how our team fits with yours.

  3. Deployment

Our Close Protection trained BDOs deploy, linked to your control room and security team throughout.

  4. Debrief

On most occasions we hold a hot debrief with you before we leave, and a written behavioural detection report is available on request in the following days.

Officers on the day, awareness all year

As well as deploying BDOs, we can train your own stewards, door and front-of-house teams. Our one day Level 2 Behavioural Detection Awareness course runs at your venue for groups of 4 to 12, assessed through live exercises and aligned with NPSA guidance. For teams who need the full skill set, we run the Level 3 Behavioural Detection Officer course.

Ask us a question
  • How many BDOs will we need?

It depends on the size of the venue, the attendance and the risk. We advise after the venue assessment and only recommend the number the task needs.

  • Will your team work with our stewards, door team and control room?

Yes. Our BDOs work with your CCTV control room and venue security, and fit around your existing operation.

  • Are your operatives licensed, vetted and insured?

Every operative is SIA licensed and vetted to BS7858+, with more frequent DBS checks and social media reviews. 86.5% are former public service personnel. We hold £10m public liability cover.

  • Can you deploy outside London or outside the UK?

Yes. We deploy across the UK and worldwide.

  • Will BDOs disturb our customers?

We favour a covert approach, so most people never know we are there, and interventions are calm conversations rather than confrontations.

  • How much notice do you need?

We can deploy BDOs within hours. Our management team are all Behavioural Detection Managers, and two of them are national trainers.
